Build An Ebook – Step One

by

Welcome to my BUILD AN EBOOK series. If you missed the introduction, you can find it here. This post will guide you through Step One

But first, I would like to tell you about my core beliefs about ebooks. I believe every business needs at least one well-built ebook that can be used to share your story with new or potential customers. I also believe those of you who are seeking to curate family memories need to build your skills to be able to easily create PDFs or print books filled with special stories and photos. These will become family heirlooms.

Now, to Step One.

Step One in the ebook building process is to answer 2 questions.

  1. Why this content?
  2. What do you hope to achieve by publishing this content?

Answering these questions will clearly set your intentions for your published content and will guide you through the entire building process.

Let’s Dig Into Question 1 – “Why this content?”

Take just a few minutes and consider the content you have already written or will be creating.

For the ebook I’m creating for family story collectors, here’s my answer to Question 1:

The 52 writing prompts or “story sparks” that I want to publish will help individuals or family members by triggering memories that can be written down for their descendents. The stories can reveal parts of a loved one’s past that might have been lost otherwise to future generations as well as beloved family tales that have been shared before. Following the prompts and writing the stories will also prove beneficial to the story writer by bringing back memories and evoking emotions from past experiences.

Let’s Dig Into Question 2 – “What do you hope to achieve?”

Now it’s time to follow Dr. Stephen Covey’s wisdom. “Begin with the end in mind.” The question for you to answer before you start to build your ebook is “What do you hope to achieve by publishing this content?”

“Begin With the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.” – Dr. Stephen Covey

For the ebook I’m creating for family story collectors, here’s my answer to Question 2:

I’m creating this publication as a content asset for the part of my business that provides tools for family story collectors. It is especially focused on individuals and families who are creating a collection of family stories to be digitally curated along with their photos, videos and memorabilia. The ebook will be sold on Amazon as a KDP product and also sold in digital PDF format via my own ecommerce store.

Now It’s Your Turn

Take just a few minutes and jot down or type into a doc why the content you want to publish needs to be published.

Then write a little more to answer the second question regarding the End Goal of your ebook.

In my next post, I’ll tell you about Step 2 where you’ll start giving shape to your ebook.

Until then,
